8 things you need to know about newly crowned ‘Miss Universe’, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

Nel-Peters beat out first runner-up, Miss Colombia Laura González for the crown Sunday night in Las Vegas.

Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned the new Miss Universe on Sunday night, Nov. 26.

The South African beauty queen beat over 90 contestants from around the globe to take the title‚ making her only the second South African to ever win the crown.

Here are 5 things you need to know about your new Miss Universe.

1. She is from Sedgefield in the Western Cape.

2. Nel-Peters earned a yearlong salary and a luxury apartment in New York City for the duration of her reign amongst other things.

3. In a pre-taped interview for the competition, Nel revealed she helped develop a program to train women in self-defense in various situations after she was robbed at gunpoint a month after being crowned as Miss South Africa.

4. She has previously said her biggest motivation is her half-sister‚ who was born without a cerebellum and is disabled.

5. She has always been proud of the fact that she has “four parents” as both her mom and dad are remarried.

6. Demi was elected as the Deputy Junior Mayor of the George City Council when she was in grade 11.

7. She loves making handmade cards and is a lover of scrapbooking.
