I nearly wept for Seyi Shay at the grand finale of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) 2017, which was held on Sunday at Eko Hotel and Suites. She had everything going well for her, until a movement of madness. She tripped and the whole audience was thrown into panic.
Everyone feared for her, everyone screamed for her. I screamed too. But as she struggled to pick herself up after losing her steps, no thanks to her beautiful dress which she stepped on, she demonstrated to all that once you fall, don’t stay down too long. It is alright to fall, but it is not alright to stay down forever.
Thereafter the fall, she went ahead to give a performance, which was a major highlight of the event. She also didn’t pretend the terror didn’t happen, as she attacked it right before the audience.
She said, “The devil is a liar and as a professional, the show must always go on.” Truly, the devil couldn’t stop her shine and he must be ashamed he couldn’t.
While the likes of Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Simi, YCee and other African singers won the major awards, Seyi Shey won the night. Even 2Baba couldn’t hide his admiration of how she overcame the stage terror, saying, “I love the way you handled it… Real professional.”
But without the fall, her energetic and passionate performance might have gone unnoticed. In a way, the fall charmed everyone’s attention to her and she didn’t fail to show the audience that she is stronger than she looks.
For instance, I started paying attention to her after the fall and same applied to the fun-seekers who were close to me.
Before the 2017 AFRIMA, many people didn’t know the strong Seyi Shay. Now, all Nigerians know. She turned an embarrassment, capable of damaging her music career, to a blessing.
