Chef and food critic, Opeyemi Oluwatobi Famakin, was on Saturday limited to a reception role at his friend’s wedding.
The plan was for him to be on groomsman duties but the Baptist church where the ceremony was held barred him for entering the building, he said.
“At a Baptist church in Isolo, groomsman duties and the reverend just told me I’m not allowed to wear earrings in church,” Famakin tweeted on Saturday.
“I calmly left the church, guess it’ll be the reception for me.
“Shout out to Nigerian christianity, and hope they have fine dining restaurants in hell,” he said.
Reacting to the tweet, some Nigerians berated the University of Lagos (UNILAG) graduate for chasing clout at his friend’s expense and dragging the church unnecessarily. They said he should have removed his earrings to comply with the church rule.
But Famakin added that his friend had no issue with the incident and that even the reverend later took photos with him.
He said, “And to the team ‘Do it for your friend’, the friend escorted me out while we laughed about it. He snapped the pictures I posted and said ‘see you at the reception, if dem born your papa well, no spray me’.“
“I wondered why the pastor was all nice to me after the service and asked for pictures,” he added after someone shared a photo of the chef and the reverend smiling up.
The sharer questioned Famakin’s account of the event, asking how he was able to pose with the same reverend who barred him from entering the church.
Famakin replied, “Patiently waiting for the pastor to post on his page and say He had a conversation with me, so that I can post the video of him saying ‘My friend, please lets take a picture together and make sure the earrings show, oya smile’, and then left immediately.
“Explains it all. Thank God my friends recorded the whole thing.”
They’re still dragging the matter on Twitter.
