After failing to evacuate Nigerians from Ukraine before airports closure, FG declares readiness to help when airports reopen

The Federal Government has expressed the willingness to evacuate Nigerians who are currently in Ukraine.

There has been tension since Russia invaded Ukraine in the early hours of Thursday, with the Nigerian government initially telling affected Nigerians to take responsibility for their own safety.

However, hours after the House of Representatives assured that it will work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Air Peace to commence the evacuation of Nigerians in the country, the federal government expressed willingness to help.

A statement by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca K. Omayuli, said the process will commence as soon as the country’s airports are opened.

“Nigerian Embassy in Ukraine has reassured the safety of Nigerians in that country, adding that ‘measures are being undertaken to keep them safe and facilitate the evacuation of those who wish to leave’.”
