Breaking News: Leaders and Residents of Ajah Protest at Lagos State Assembly Against Olumegbon Family Over Chieftaincy Dispute
An Urgent Call to Prevent Anarchy in Ajah Community: Save Our Soul
The people of Ajah, a peaceful and rapidly developing community in Lagos State, have taken to the Lagos State Assembly in Ikeja to protest against the alleged imposition of a monarch from the Olumegbon family. The protest underscores the tension brewing over attempts to alter the longstanding traditional leadership structure in Ajah.
For over 300 years, the traditional leadership of Ajah has been vested in the Baale of Ajah, produced exclusively by the Ojupon and Ogunsemo families, as recognized by the Chieftaincy Declaration. The protesters argue that the Olumegbon family, which they claim is not indigenous to Ajah, has no entitlement to the traditional stool.
Allegations of Imposition and Disregard for Court Orders
According to the protesters, there is a pending legal case (Suit No: LD/6432GCMW/2019) before Hon. Justice Aigbokhaevbo regarding this matter. An interlocutory injunction had been issued, instructing all parties, including the Lagos State Government, to maintain the status quo. However, the protesters allege that the Olumegbon family, in collaboration with certain government officials, has disregarded the court order and proceeded with plans to install one of their own as the Oba of Ajah.
This move, they claim, not only violates the court’s directive but also disrespects the community’s history and traditions. The Ajah community asserts that it has no history of subjugation under a monarch, and attempts to impose an Oba threaten the peace and coexistence of the area.
An Appeal to the Authorities
The protesters have called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the State Assembly, and relevant committees to urgently intervene in order to avert potential chaos. They see this as an opportunity for the government to uphold the rule of law and prevent the breakdown of peace in Ajah.
Community Speaks
“This is an unacceptable attempt to rewrite our history. The Ajah community is built on equality, with no subjects or overlords. Imposing a king where none has existed is an invitation to anarchy,” a community leader stated.
The people of Ajah are resolute in their stance, demanding that the historical and legal rights of the community be respected and calling for justice to prevent a crisis.
