Tinubu Releases N50bn to Settle ASUU Earned Allowances, Promises End to Strikes

The Federal Government has disbursed N50 billion to settle earned allowances for university staff unions, fulfilling a promise made by President Bola Tinubu to improve the education sector.
Education Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa, through a statement by Ministry spokesperson Folasade Boriowo, confirmed the payment on Wednesday, describing it as a strong demonstration of Tinubu’s commitment to transforming Nigeria into a knowledge-driven economy.
Dr. Alausa stated that the gesture goes beyond financial settlement, highlighting it as a reflection of the president’s faith in Nigerian youths and the vital role of university staff in shaping the nation’s future.
He added, “By prioritising their welfare, we are laying the foundation for a future where every Nigerian child receives highly qualitative and globally competitive education.”
The administration also commended academic and non-academic staff for their cooperation and for maintaining peace across federal universities, marking one of the longest periods without academic disruption in recent history.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to keeping Nigerian students in school: “The youth are the heartbeat of our country. Their future is extremely important to me. Strikes in our institutions will soon become a thing of the past.”
The payment addresses a long-standing grievance that has led to repeated strikes by university unions under previous administrations.
