Three Policemen Detained Over Death of Suspect in Bauchi Custody

Three policemen in Bauchi State have been detained following the suspicious death of a suspect, Abubakar Auwal, who died while in custody at a divisional police station in Jega.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, Auwal was arrested on April 15, 2025, over an alleged theft involving trailer rims. However, he reportedly collapsed the next morning while in detention and was rushed to the general hospital in Jega, where he was confirmed dead later that evening at 10:00 p.m.

The incident has sparked concerns over possible misconduct, prompting the Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, to order a discreet investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). Preliminary findings reportedly implicated three officers, leading to their detention.

The statement also confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer of the affected station has been queried and redeployed as part of the ongoing probe.

While the names of the detained officers were not disclosed, the police assured the public of their commitment to professionalism and transparency as investigations continue.
