Funke Akindele Announces Intentions to Return to Politics

Nollywood star and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed her plans to return to politics, affirming her continued commitment to public service despite her earlier electoral loss.
Speaking at the #WithChude Live event in Lagos, the Jenifa’s Diary actress reflected on her experience as the 2023 deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), where she ran alongside Olajide ‘Jandor’ Adediran. Although their ticket lost to incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akindele said the experience shaped her significantly.
“I need to support, I need to give back. That is why I went into politics,” she said. “Getting into it, seeing the violence, seeing the shouting… then I started watching female politicians like Abike Dabiri. The way they speak and command respect made me realise I can do it too.”
Akindele said politics taught her boldness, courage, and the value of speaking with authority. She also noted that her political journey pushed her to become more informed, data-driven, and passionate about national issues.
Despite the challenges, she affirmed her readiness to return to the political scene: “Ask me if I am going to do it again? Oh, yes.”
