Wigwe’s Helicopter Crash Caused by Pilot Disorientation, Poor Safety Oversight – U.S. Report

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has concluded that the fatal helicopter crash which claimed the life of former Access Holdings CEO Herbert Wigwe, his family, and others in February 2024 was caused by the pilot’s spatial disorientation due to poor visibility and the helicopter company’s safety lapses.
The report says the pilot chose to fly under visual rules despite instrument weather conditions, leading to loss of control. The NTSB also cited the company’s failure to enforce safety protocols, conduct proper risk assessments, and ensure compliance with flight regulations as contributing factors.
The crash killed all six onboard, including Wigwe, his wife Doreen, their son Chizi, and former NGX Group chairman, Abimbola Ogunbanjo.
