After Waterfront Demolitions, Lagos Assembly Suggests Moving Makoko Residents to Epe

Lagos State House of Assembly has advised the state government to relocate residents displaced by recent demolitions in Makoko, Oko-Agbon, and Sogunro to the Agbowa area of Lagos State.

The recommendation followed the House’s consideration and adoption of a report by its Committee on Rules and Business after lawmakers reviewed a petition highlighting the impact of ongoing demolitions in the waterfront communities.

Lawmakers said the demolition exercise, carried out by the Lagos State Government, left many residents without homes and disrupted the lives of thousands, including women, children and the elderly.

According to the committee, the affected communities have long relied on fishing as their primary means of survival and traditionally live along the water because of their occupation. It also noted that conditions in the area worsened after the demolition, creating environmental and health concerns for those still living there.

To address the situation, the Assembly urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to approve the relocation of the displaced residents to a planned low-cost housing estate in Agbowa, where they would be able to continue their fishing activities.

The demolition operations, which took place between December 2025 and January 2026 near the Third Mainland Bridge, triggered protests from residents and civil society groups who criticised the exercise and demanded proper resettlement plans and compensation for those affected.
