Chinese, Nigerian Arraigned in Lagos for Possessing 7,200kg of Pangolin Scales

A Chinese man, Zheng Chao Hong (aka Zheng Gaopeng), and a Nigerian woman, Amaka Marcus, have been arraigned by the Nigeria Customs Service over the illegal possession and attempted sale of 7,200kg of pangolin scales — an endangered wildlife species.

They were brought before Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court in Lagos on a three-count charge involving conspiracy, unlawful possession, and illegal dealing. The contraband was concealed in 179 sacks and seized in Ogun and Lagos States.

Both pleaded not guilty. The court granted them bail of N5 million each, with strict conditions including sureties — one of whom must be a Chinese national, and the other a property owner in Nigeria.

The case has been adjourned to July 14, 2025.
