Ex-President Obasanjo’s Daughter, Iyabo Obasanjo, Rules Out Senate Return, Targets Ogun Governorship

Daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has ruled out a return to the Senate, declaring that her political ambition is now firmly focused on a possible bid for the Ogun State governorship.

Speaking during an interview on Eagle7 Sports FM on Saturday, the former Ogun Central senator confirmed her return to active partisan politics and her recent registration with the All Progressives Congress (APC). She said she has no interest in serving as a commissioner or rejoining her former political party, explaining that a governorship run is the only reason she has decided to return to politics. Obasanjo noted that her decision was influenced by sustained pressure from supporters who had continued to mobilise and encourage her to make a comeback.

She added that preparations for the governorship journey have already begun, stressing that she and her team are committed to seeing the process through. Obasanjo recently completed her APC e-registration in Ibogun Ward 11, Ifo Local Government Area, a development confirmed by party allies.

Her return comes about 15 years after she stepped away from frontline politics following her tenure in the Senate between 2007 and 2011. Before her election to the National Assembly, she served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health, after which she relocated to the United States to pursue an academic career.
