Tony O. Elumelu CFR stands as one of Africa’s most influential business leaders, a man whose name has been cemented as one of the biggest entrepreneurs and known for economic empowerment and long-term African development. An Indigene of Delta State but born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. Tony Elumelu built his reputation in the financial sector after acquiring and transforming what later became United Bank for Africa (UBA). Under his leadership, UBA grew into a pan-African banking giant with operations in over 20 African countries, as well as the UK, US, UAE and France. His vision shifted the bank from survival to sustainability, positioning it as a strong driver of financial inclusion across Africa.
Beyond banking, Elumelu is the Founder and Chairman of Heirs Holdings, a diversified investment company with interests in power, energy, hospitality, healthcare, technology and financial services. One of his most notable contributions is through Transcorp Power and Transnational Corporation of Nigeria, where he has played a key role in improving Nigeria’s power generation capacity, addressing one of the country’s most critical challenges.

Tony Elumelu is also globally recognised for pioneering the philosophy of Africapitalism, the belief that Africa’s private sector holds the key to the continent’s economic transformation. He is married to Dr. Awele Vivien Elumelu a medical doctor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist in her own right. She is the Co-founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, a leading philanthropy empowering a new generation of African entrepreneurs driving poverty eradication, catalyzing job creation across all 54 countries and increasing economic empowerment for women. Dr. Awele is widely respected for her quiet strength, compassion, and dedication to service.
Together, they have a close-knit family with seven children.
