GoldMyne EXCLUSIVE: Real reason ‘greedy’ Ikeja Electric threw millions of Lagosians into darkness
One month ago, Ikeja Electric told customers about a “system upgrade” that they said would affect several Lagos communities, where millions of people live, for two months.
Following the announcement, even areas where customers pay a premium in order to enjoy stable power supply began seeing their services rationed.
Areas marked for blackouts and rationing (8am to 7pm daily) included Oregun, Police Training College, Oba Akran, Oke Ira, Ogba, Magodo, Anifowoshe and Omole Phase One, according to a statement Ikeja Electric issued on October 4. The work was to begin on October 11 and last for eight weeks.
Exclusive information reaching GoldMyne TV has it that the so-called system upgrade is a smokescreen meant to direct the public away from Ikeja Electric’s real intention.
The disco, we gathered, had reached an agreement with another estate to give them the Magodo/Omole 24-hour supply service at a premium, and had to throw millions of Lagosians into darkness in order to keep to the said deal which will enable it rake in more millions.
Ikeja Electric’s claim that the “upgrade” was meant to the improve the power infrastructure for the other communities who now suffer terrible power supply may be far from the truth, a dependable source within the company told us.
“They’re running a premium powerline to Oje Omivian Estate at Cley bus stop opposite Christ Embassy church in Oregun, Lagos,” the insider told our correspondent.
There was, however, a hiccup when the residents association began struggling to pay the needed funds. The project, which is actually contracted to another firm, was delayed and the association approached a bank to help meet the financial demand.
Normalcy could return by December 10 if the bank is forthcoming, our source said.
“The claim that the project upgrade is for the benefit of the affected communities is not really true,” the source said.
“It is strictly business and Ikeja Electric did not tell the public the full story in their October 4 statement. Millions of people are in darkness because of the greed of a few,” the source said.
As of the time of filing this report, the residents’ association, was still battling with to fulfill the financial requirements of its deal with Ikeja Electric, our source said.
“The project could be delayed and millions of people may have to endure blackouts and poor supply for longer,” our source added.
