IGP Deploys Special Anti-Bandit Squads Nationwide Amid Escalating Violence

In response to the growing insecurity across Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the nationwide deployment of special anti-bandit squads and directed all Police Mobile Force (PMF) units to maintain a combat-ready squad on constant standby.
The directive was issued during a meeting with PMF Squadron Commanders in Abuja on Tuesday, following a spate of deadly attacks that left at least 21 people dead in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto States.
Egbetokun stressed that the PMF must reclaim its role as a swift, decisive strike force, with a strong emphasis on operational excellence, ethics, and human rights. He mandated regular training, unit restructuring for greater agility, and increased accountability for commanders regarding the conduct of their personnel.
Reiterating the plan to withdraw mobile officers from VIP escort duties, the IGP said such assignments have diluted the force’s effectiveness. He emphasized a renewed focus on combating violent crimes, restoring internal security, and rebuilding public trust in the police.
“The PMF must once again be seen as the dominant force in internal security and a model of tactical excellence,” Egbetokun declared.
