LASTMA Warns: Eating, Drinking or Smoking While Driving Could Land You in Jail

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to motorists, stating that eating, drinking, or smoking while driving is a punishable offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

In a post shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, LASTMA emphasized that such actions constitute distracted driving and pose serious risks to road safety.

According to the agency, offenders face strict penalties, including the impoundment of their vehicles, up to three months in jail, or six months of community service, depending on the court’s judgment and the gravity of the offence.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the rising number of road accidents in Lagos, with authorities urging drivers to remain focused and avoid all forms of distraction while behind the wheel.
