Malami writes 36 governors over stamp duty

The attorney-general of the federation Abubakar Malami said he has notified Nigerian governors over the federal government’s effort to recover stamp duty revenue.

Malami made the disclosure Wednesday as FG and states are locked in a battle over the collection of value- added tax (VAT).

A statement by Malami’s media aide, Umar Gwandu, stressed that although FG had earlier set up the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Audit and Recovery of back years stamp duties from January 15, 2016 to June 30, 2020, the committee was yet to make any recovery.

“At this stage, liabilities are being established, and no actual recovery has been made”, Malami stated.

The AGF said he, therefore, wrote the governors “for the purpose of compliance with audit and recovery of back years of stamp duty”.
