Okpara Varsity Graduate Invents Reusable Sanitary Pads from Banana Trunks

A young biochemist and graduate of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Miss Joy Mamkwe, has created a locally made, reusable sanitary pad using banana trunks — an innovation aimed at tackling menstrual hygiene challenges among low-income earners in Nigeria.

Mamkwe, who hails from Bende LGA in Abia State, said her research journey started in her final year in 2022, when she discovered that banana trunks — often discarded as waste — could be transformed into useful textile materials. She has since developed a sterilization process, including UV treatment, to ensure the pads are safe and hygienic.

Although she has begun small-scale production on the university campus, Mamkwe is seeking N1.5 million to rent a factory space and expand operations in order to meet growing demand. She revealed that she has already received orders from organizations for distribution to students and rural women.

While awaiting NAFDAC certification, she explained that the agency had given her a list of requirements, including securing a proper production facility. She turned down an investor who sought co-founder status, following advice from her mentor.

The Abia State Commissioner for SMEs, Mike Akpara, expressed interest in her project and urged her to submit a formal request and demonstrate her innovation to the ministry. Meanwhile, MOUAU’s Centre for Gender, Youth, and Child Development has shown support, having already distributed her products during International Women’s Day.

Mamkwe also revealed her plans to pursue a master’s degree in Public Health to better contribute to women’s health and empower more girls through affordable menstrual hygiene solutions.
