Over 100 people were in Ikoyi building when it collapsed — survivor [VIDEO]
While the authorities say it could not yet put a figure to the number of people trapped inside a building that collapsed in Lagos, a survivor has painted a grimmer picture.
Recall that a 21-storey building being constructed by FourScore Heights Limited collapsed on Monday, trapping many including, according to reports, company CEO Femi Osibona.
“We are not sure about how many people were inside,” police commissioner Hakeem Odumosu had said. “Our priority now is to rescue people.”
But a man who said he survived the tragedy, claimed over 100 people were working at the site of the ill-fated building.
“I and my brother escaped,” he told Aljazeera. “They have more than 100 people working there”.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu cut short his G-20 trip to visit the scene and speak with families of those believed to be trapped in the ruins.
The Lagos governor also ordered an immediate probe into the tragedy and vowed that anyone found culpable would face the full wrath of the law.
“This an event that could be described clearly as a national disaster. Mistakes were made from all angles,” Sanwo-Olu said at the Ikoyi venue on Wednesday.
While sympathising with the relatives of the victims, the governor said such an incident “should not be happening in a modern-day city like Lagos”.
