Panic in Kogi Forest as Train Breaks Down, Passengers Trek for Hours Through Dangerous Terrain

Passengers on a train journey from Agbor to Itakpe, Kogi State, faced a terrifying ordeal after the train broke down in the middle of a remote forest, forcing them to trek for hours in search of help.

One of the stranded travellers, Marxist activist Kola Edokpayi, shared the frightening experience on social media. He described the location as an “evil forest” with no network coverage and a reputation for being frequented by armed herders, heightening passengers’ fears.

With no sign of immediate assistance, the travellers abandoned the stalled train and began what Edokpayi called an “endurance trek” through the wilderness. “We’ve been trekking for more than three hours, and we’re still on the move,” he wrote during the journey.

In a surprising turn, Edokpayi revealed that Fulani herders they met during the trek provided unexpected help, guiding and assisting the group through the unfamiliar terrain. “They were remarkably friendly and kind,” he noted, countering widespread fears.

He called on the Federal Government to urgently improve maintenance of the country’s public transportation systems, warning that Nigerians are left with no safe or reliable travel options. “Airlines cancel flights without notice, roads are unsafe due to kidnappers and poor conditions, and now trains are breaking down in forests,” he lamented.
