The police in Ekiti State have arrested 10 suspects over the death of Modupe Deborah Atanda, a 200- level Nursing student of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).
Atanda was earlier reported missing but later found dead. Her lifeless body was discovered in a shallow grave a few metres to the school. Confirming the development, spokesperson for Ekiti State Police Command, Sunday Abutu, appealed to members of the public to remain calm, assuring that perpetrators of the evil act would face the wrath of the law.
“While appealing for calm, the commissioner said the Command would do everything possible to unearth the identity of perpetrators and bring them to book.
“The Command enjoins anyone with useful information concerning the ugly incident to visit Oye Divisional Police Headquarters, Oye-Ekiti, or State Criminal and Investigation Department (SCID), or call 09064050086/08053499199,” he added.
Also, the University’s Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, in a statement, yesterday, confirmed the recovery of Atanda’s body. To prevent a breakdown of law and order, the management has ordered students out of the campus with immediate effect.
The statement read in part; “It would be recalled that earlier today, the management had made public the disturbing news of Atanda missing, and assured that investigation was ongoing to unravel the whereabouts of the poor student.
“But current information reaching the security outfit of the university has revealed that the said student is dead.
“While the management condoles with the deceased family and generality of the university community, particularly our dear students, we reiterate that investigation is still ongoing and it’s being done in collaboration with national security agencies to get to the root of the sad development and bring culprits to book.
“To this end, all students (Stream A and any other full-time student still on any of the school campuses) are hereby directed to leave with immediate effect to ensure a proper, holistic and unimpeded thorough investigation.
“It is worthy of note that armed security personnel have been quickly deployed for patrol, surveillance and security purposes. Rest assured that all steps would be taken by the university to fish out any, and all culpable persons, and they shall face consequences of their actions.”
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy, while 10 suspects are currently in custody undergoing investigation.
