Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ekiti State are now contributing N500 each to pay the ransom demanded by kidnappers of one of their colleagues, Mrs Owoniyi.
Mrs Owoniyi, a teacher in St Pauls Primary School, Ikole Ekiti, was kidnapped by gunmen along Ayebode Ekiti road on Sunday.
The abductors are said to have made a demand for ransom, but the amount was not disclosed.
It was gathered that the account number of the victim’s husband, Mr Owoniyi Gbenga Marck, had been made available for the contribution.
In a message posted on the teachers’ WhatsApp platform, “Ikole LG NUT”, it was said that the kidnappers were threatening the victim to the extent that “the crying agony of the woman’s voice on loudspeaker for sympathisers to hear.”
“Please, my people, let us be our brother’s keeper. The kidnappers are threatening the victim to the extent that the kidnappers put the crying agony of the woman’s voice into (a phone’s) loudspeaker for sympathisers to hear.
“Mrs Owoniyi is pleading to you and me to deliver her from death. In this wise, NUT has appealed to all primary school teachers to start contributing N500 each.
“My colleagues, I see this as a good gesture to join them contributing the amount and the Lord will reward you in return.
“Try to send this information to as many people and teaching professional groups as you can. The kidnappers had given few hours for this. Just to beg them, we’re still negotiating but they switched off this morning.”
