Shouts of “Jagaban!” rented the air at the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola, on Sunday after Bola Ahmed Tinubu teased the youth.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, who was in the area as part of his consultation tour on his presidential ambition, met with the prominent monarch and with Olubadan-designate, Lekan Balogun.
Tinubu then chanced upon a moment in which he threw a seemingly harmless jibe at some of the young people present. He spoke in Yoruba:
“What if you become president? Will you run us out of town? You too will grow up and grow old. You will become elders. You will become president…but after me.”
The crowd said amen and hailed the former Lagos governor.
Tinubu’s vibe mirrored President Muhammadu Buhari’s swagger when he signed the ‘Not Too Young To Run’ bill into law.
The president, at the time, told the young men and women that they were free to challenge for Aso Rock after he gets re-elected and completed his second tenure.
Buhari signed the bill into law in 2018, a year shy of 2019 when he was re-elected president. Tinubu, 69, hopes to succeed him in 2023.
