US Honours Wole Soyinka, Nike Okundaye for Global Impact on Art and Culture

The United States Government, through the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate, has honoured Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka and African art icon Chief Nike Okundaye for their remarkable contributions to global art and culture.

Soyinka received Distinguished Honors for his literary excellence, cultural influence, and advocacy for human rights and democracy. Okundaye was celebrated for revolutionising contemporary African art and preserving the Adire resist-dyeing tradition, which she has taught to over 5,000 women, empowering communities across Nigeria.

The awards were presented during the unveiling of the African Cultural Festival 2025 at the Pennsylvania State Capitol. The festival, set for September 19–20, aims to foster international cultural exchange, boost Africa’s creative economy, and launch Duduplugs, a digital platform connecting global creatives.

Festival organisers praised Lagos State’s role in inspiring the event, especially through the Lagos Black Heritage Festival led by Soyinka. The official countdown to the 2025 edition begins in Lagos later this April.
