WAFCON: Nigeria’s Super Falcons to battle Morocco in final

Hosts Atlas Lionesses of Morocco will do battle with Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating Ghana 4-2 on penalties in a tense semi-final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Morocco holding their nerve in the shootout. Evelyn Badu missed Ghana’s third penalty, and 18-year-old Comfort Yeboah saw her effort saved by Morocco goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi, handing the Atlas Lionesses a dramatic victory.

Ghana had taken the lead in the 26th minute through Stella Nyamekye after a dominant first-half display.

Morocco responded early in the second half, with winger Sakina Ouzraoui netting the equaliser 10 minutes after the break. Neither side could find a winner in extra time.

The result means Morocco will contest back-to-back WAFCON finals on home soil, having reached the 2022 final where they lost to South Africa. This time, they face the most decorated side in African women’s football history.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked their place in the final with a thrilling 2-1 win over defending champions South Africa in Casablanca.

Rasheedat Ajibade gave Nigeria a 1-0 lead from the penalty spot just before halftime, but South Africa equalised through Linda Motlhalo’s penalty on the hour mark. The Super Falcons sealed victory in stoppage time with a stunning strike from Michelle Alozie.

Nigeria, nine-time champions, are now just one win away from a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. The Super Falcons remain unbeaten in all nine of their previous WAFCON final appearances.

The 2025 final promises a captivating contest between Nigeria’s proven pedigree and Morocco’s rising force, with the Atlas Lionesses chasing their first-ever continental crown in front of a passionate home crowd.
