5 Nigerian Entertainers Who Changed Their Stage Names And Why

A few hours ago, the entertainment industry woke up to the news of rapper M.I Abaga deciding to change his stage name, a path many colleagues have trodden in the past.

For this article, we will be mentioning 5 entertainers who changed their names and the reason behind it.

2Baba

Following the end of his contract with iconic group Plantashun Boyz, where he was mainly addressed as 2Face, the legendary artiste launched a solo career and on January 10, 2006, announced a change of name; asking to now be addressed as 2baba. On his reason for the name change, he told Wazobia FM this w2baba sounded more grown and because his friends had been calling him 2baba for a long time.

Kizz Daniel altered his name from Kiss Daniel to Kizz Daniel following a messy legal battle with his former record label, G-Worldwide. The singer on the 23rd of May 2018, took to social media to announce the name change due according to the label, they created the name, Kiss Daniel.

Ladipoe (Poe)

”Big Energy” crooner Ladipoe was formerly known as Poe but had to change this name to Ladipoe due to copyright claims. According to Mavins Record, where Ladipoe is signed, a name change was important after the label was slammed with a copyright lawsuit.

Cynthia Morgan 

Many fans were worried after Dancehall artiste, Cynthia Morgan decided to take a long break from the industry. In 2017, she released a new song under the stage name Madrina. She again went MIA and returned a while later amidst a major controversy involving her and her formal label boss, Jude Okoye. Madrina, during an Instagram live chat revealed she not only lost her stage name, but her social media account and royalties as wel, due to the issue between her and the label, Northside.

BXNX

Daniel Benson popularly known as Buju had many tongues wagging back in 2018 when he changed his stage name to BNXN (pronounced Benson). This was due to haven been mistaken for Jamaican artiste Buju Banton, a name that also is trademarked. 

A statement by his management read thus; “We had to change his name because of the confusion in the market space between the names Buju and the Jamaican singer Buju Banton, as a fast-growing global brand that BNXN is, the name Buju makes it harder to trademark and take certain legal procedures, so to avoid legal actions, we had to change the name.”
