5 popular TV shows that kept us entertained in the 80s ad 90s

The 80s and 90s in the Nigerian entertainment scene are one many of us will not forget in hurry.

Here are 10 TV shows that kept many of us entertained.

MIRROR IN THE SUN

This was one of the few shows that aired every Sunday night on the NTA network. It was aired from January 1984 to January 1986. The show, written by Lola Fani-Kayode in collaboration with Cinekraft Ltd., had in total 52 episodes. Some of the castmates were; Lari Williams (Ladipo), Florence Edo (Ladipo’s mother), Ameze Giwa-Osagie (Ebiere), Barbara Soky (Yinka Fowole), Omawumi Efueye (Tosan), Clarion Chukwura (Tinu), Enebeli Elebuwa (Chike), Dupe Adetuwo (Ranti Tokunbo), amongst others.

NEW MASQUERADE

From 8:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m, Tuesday nights in the 80s and 90s were glorious. The show was written by James Iroha, who also played the character Giringori and it aired on the NTA network channel and is one of the country’s longest-running sitcoms. The show which was created after the civil war to aid in easing many’s tension starred the likes of Chika Okpala (Zebrudaya alias 4.30), Lizzy Evoeme (Ovularia), Claude Eke (Jegede Sokoya), James Iroha (Giringori Akabogu), Christy Essien-Igbokwe (Apena), and David Ofor (Clarus) were among the cast members.

Cockcrow At Dawn

Cockcrow at Dawn was created to promote then-President Shehu Shagari’s Green Revolution” agricultural promotion initiative. Premiering in 1980, this Peter Igho production starred the likes of George Menta (Bello), Tola Awobode Akinjobi (Lare), Karim Yero (Uncle Gaga), Ene Oloja (Zemaye), Sadiq Daba (Bitrus), amongst others. Entertainer Bongos Ikwue composed and performed the program’s theme song, which is also titled “Cockcrow At Dawn.”

Tales By Moonlight 

Some kids in the 80s and early 90s had their bedtime stories read to them via the TV and this was one night everyone always looked forward to. This 30-minute children’s television program saw ‘Aunty,’ played by Nkem Orakwe, narrating African folklore to some children who gather around her beneath a tree. Tales By Moonlight aired every Sunday at 6:30 p.m. on NTA. It started airing in 1984 and lasted till the 1990s.

The Village Headmaster

The Village Headmaster ran from 1968 to 1984 and to date remains one of the longest-running shows on TV. The show was created by Olusegun Olusola, produced by Dejumo Lewis, and developed by Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation. The show had the likes of Ted Mukoro Femi Robinson, Justus Esiri, Dejumo Lewis, and Clara Olushola as cast members
