Adesina Omowumi Aishat: OAU shut indefinitely as protesting students demand justice for dead colleague

The protest that came after the death of Adesina Omowumi Aishat has resulted in the closure of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.

OAU students protested after the 24-year-old undergraduate reportedly breathed her last under controversial circumstances.

Aishat had reported to OAU’s health centre on Tuesday with signs and symptoms of a severe infection which was promptly treated, the school said in a statement today. The lady was, according to the school, then asked to report back as an outpatient.

When she reported back to the health centre on Thursday morning, she was examined referred to Seventh Day Adventist Hospital for further treatment, OAU explained in the statement signed by spokesperson Abiodun Olanrewaju.

Aishat was pronounced dead at Seventh Day Adventist Hospital. Angered by the development, OAU students protested against poor health service in the school and the management has now responded by sending them home.

“The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, have accordingly closed down the school until further notice,” OAU said in the statement issued on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day.

“This is to forestall further breakdown of law and order.

“In view of this, all students are hereby directed to vacate their halls of residence and the campus latest by 12:00 noon on Saturday, 2nd October 2021.

“Consequently, the swearing-in of the newly elected Students’ Union officials has been put on hold, pending a review of the situation.

“In the meantime, the University management has put in place the machinery to unravel the circumstances surrounding the immediate and remote cause(s) of the crisis.”

The university spokesperson stated that the management sympathises with the parents, friends, colleagues and the entire students of the University on the sad loss and prays for the repose of her soul.
