At least two students were killed after a speeding truck rammed into pedestrians in the Ojodu area of Lagos on Tuesday, the police said.
This contradicts unconfirmed claims that put the death toll at 17. The police also said that 12 students were injured in the accident. The victims are students of Bab Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu, formerly Ojodu Grammar School.
Parents and other concerned persons stormed the school this morning in search of students who were believed to be missing following the incident.
Some of those at the venue accused security officials of firing shots to disperse protesters. The police reportedly did the same as anger boiled over in the aftermath of the incident yesterday.
Demonstrators were also believed to have, this morning, gathered at the office of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to protest their said involvement in the tragedy.
FRSC officers were allegedly chasing the truck when it rammed into a group of students who were trying to cross the road. The agency denied this claim, adding that its officers were called to the venue to save lives after the accident already happened.
Police said in a statement on Tuesday that the driver had been arrested.
Education commissioner Folashade Adefisayo also visited the school this morning. So did the chairman of Ojodu local governing council, David Odunbaku
The government is expected to release a statement on the tragedy today.
