ASUU threatens to go on another strike before Christmas

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the federal government an ultimatum of three weeks to fulfil lingering demands.

“We are giving the federal government a three-week ultimatum, if after three weeks they don’t meet our demands, we will be going on strike.

“We believe we have tried enough by giving them enough time,” union president Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke said at the University of Abuja on Monday.

If unmet, the three weeks’ ultimatum will expire before this year’s Christmas celebration which should be held on December 25.

The threat is coming as the Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) met today to deliberate next moves over the failure of the government to meet the union’s demands.

The federal government had signed a memorandum of understanding with the unions last year and had promised to fulfil demands ranging from payment of earned allowances, the introduction of the UTAS platform for university workers, payment of revitalization fund for universities among others.

The disagreement has led to several strike actions in the past.
