EFCC called me to talk like friends, not arrest me for corruption — Fani-Kayode

Former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode says his Tuesday stint with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had nothing to do with his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports had it that Fani-Kayode was being investigated for alleged forgery and manipulation of documents.

He was arrested in Lagos on Tuesday with EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren saying “I think something like that happened” without providing further details, Punch reported.

But the former minister has denied the report as “fake news”.

“I pity those that said I was arrested,” Fani-Kayode tweeted on Wednesday morning.

“They are filled with hate and live on fake news. Since when did an invitation and a friendly chat become an arrest? And even if I had been arrested, so what?

“I am not above the law and neither does joining APC give me immunity. My God is mighty.”

Fani-Kayode has also denied his reported arrests in a tweet on Tuesday.

“I just arrived at the George Hotel for dinner. I was never arrested by the EFCC. I was invited and I flew down to Lagos to see them.

“I arrived at their office at 2.00 pm and left at 8.30 pm. I was granted bail on self-recognition. They were very polite and professional. Thanks be to God.”

Some Nigerians had responded to Fani-Kayode’s tweet by asking why the EFCC would need to grant him bail if they never arrested him.

This is not the first time Fani-Kayode would have a “friendly chat” with the anti-graft agency.

In 2016, the former minister was remanded for 67 days alongside former minister of finance Nevada Usman over a 17-count charge of criminal conspiracy, fraud and money laundering to the tune of N4.9 billion.

They denied the allegations and were each granted a bail of N250 million.
