EndSARS: ‘No massacre at Lekki tollgate,’ Kemi Olunloyo declares

Repeated claims that Nigerian soldiers massacred protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza last October are false, Journalist Kemi Olunloyo says.

Olunloyo said she reached the conclusion after investigating the claims for six months and finding no evidence to back them up.

The military stormed the Lagos-based Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020, to dislodge anti-police brutality protesters who were, according to multiple eyewitness accounts, peacefully waving the Nigerian flag. The armed soldiers later opened fire on the peaceful protesters, killing many, several investigative reports claimed.

But Olunloyo says the claims are untrue.

She tweeted on Tuesday:

“Did anyone really die at Lekki tollgate or we are just following a rhetorical bandwagon?

“I spent six months investigating and no family had come forward with names. CNN Africa backed out of the judicial panel and everyone is mute. A year later, nothing has changed.”
