HEADIES: The Big 3 Disrespect

The Headies Awards since inception in 2006, has been plagued with controversies steaming from multiple issues involving many critical oversights, exclusions, and snubs. The show made multiple headlines during the 2015 instalment of the award show following the exchange of words between Mavin boss Don Jazzy and CEO of YBNL, Olamide.

2016 instalment of the award show witnessed a decline in attendees as major players boycotted the show. On why this was, it is safe to attribute this to personal vendettas against the organizers of the show.

Fast-forward to the 15th edition of the Headies Awards, Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid, snagged multiple nominations but somehow were conspicuously absent at the event which took place in Atlanta Georgia.

Now not only did all three stars, who have over the years granted multiple interviews, where they proudly spoke on afrobeat, their contribution and impact to the genre globally, boycott the show, they decided against acknowledging the existence of the award show in any way, form or shape.

My opinion, this move by all three is nothing short of immature and downright disrespectful. The show is designed to seek out and recognize outstanding performances in the music industry and have done this consistently for more than 15 years, if this isn’t outstanding and worthy of at least the littlest acknowledgemnt by all three who have at some point in their careers, graced the Headies stage then, I’d have to fault myself for agreeing Wizkid’s ‘Made In Lagos’ is exudes nothing but class, Burna’s ‘Love Damini’ is downright the ”the musings of an uninspired creative winning in today’s world,’ and Davido…is Davido!
