JUST IN: Senate bows to Buhari’s demands, makes U-turn on direct primaries

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday rescinded its earlier decision on making direct primaries the only method of electing candidates by political parties.

The House has now amended Clause 84 to allow for direct, indirect, and consensus options of nominating party candidates for party elections.

At the resumption of its session on Wednesday, the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abubakar, asked his colleagues to rescind the Chamber’s decision on clause 84 which was passed last year.

On giving a nod to the request, the Senate amended Clause 84 to now allow for direct, indirect, and consensus options for nominating candidates for the various political parties in the country.

The direct primary clause had earlier hindered the assent to the bill.

President Muhammadu Buhari, earlier this year, told Channels TV that he was willing to sign the bill if legislators included options for consensus and indirect primaries to the mode of selecting candidates for an election.

That demand, it appears, has now been met.
