Nigeria Decides: List of politicians who have declared intention to run for president in 2023

Ovation Magazine magazine publisher Dele Momodu is on a shortlist of Nigerians who have openly declared their intention to succeed Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

“I am very ready to run for the President of Nigeria due to the complexities of running a heterogeneous country like Nigeria,” the celebrity journalist who, last year, joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), told Arise TV on Monday.

Momodu

“I have studied the template of MKO Abiola and the problem is that we have leaders who are not accomplished which is the crux of the problems.

“I am tired of lamenting which is what every Nigerian does. I contested in the platform of the NCP (National Conscience Party), 11 years ago and the lesson I learned was that I was in an inferior position due to the status of the party; this experience made me better prepared.”

On the same day Momodu signified interest in Aso Rock, former Lagos governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with Buhari in Abuja.

“I have informed the president of my ambition but I have not informed Nigerians yet, I am still consulting,” the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) told journalists after the meeting.

Umahi

Barely 24 hours after Tinubu’s trip to Aso Rock, Ebonyi governor Dave Umahi said he too has informed the president he intend to run for the highest office in the land.

Umahi, a former PDP governor who jumped ship to APC, said Buhari told him to consult widely.

Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) former deputy governor Kingsley Moghalu was the first to openly join the race.

Moghalu

“I will run because the people matter,” Moghalu, who ran in 2019 on the platform of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), said on May 31, 2021.

“There is no hope out of our troubles until Nigeria faces the leadership question and looks for capacity, competence, and a compassionate heart for the suffering poor.”

Moghalu has since switched to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Kalu

Former Abia governor Orji Uzo Kalu has also indicated a “conditional” interest in the office of the president. Kalu said he’d run if APC zones its presidential ticket to the South.

Kalu said he has what it takes to challenge Tinubu, who is currently seen as the APC frontrunner, for the party’s presidential ticket.

Who wears the crown?
