The Ogun state police command has arrested a 33-year-old woman, Olaide Adekunle, for allegedly selling off her 18-month-old baby to a yet-to-be-identified buyer at the rate of N600,000.
The suspect was arrested after her husband, reported his wife, Olaide to the police adding that she left home for Lagos on the 15th of March 2023 with their baby girl named Moridiat Rasaq but returned home without the baby.
He added that all efforts to know where the baby is proved abortive as she was unable to state clearly where she took the child.
DPO Sango division, CSP Dahiru Saleh, promptly arrested the suspect and upon interrogation, the suspect confessed that she has sold her baby to someone in Lagos at the rate of six hundred thousand naira (#600,000).
On why she sold her child, she stated that borrowed money from a microfinance bank, and her inability to pay back the loan caused the bank agents to bombard her with threatening messages. She then relocated to Lagos and started hawking sachet water. While hawking water one day, she met a man who introduced her to the woman that eventually bought the child in Lagos.
Spokesperson of the state police command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirming the arrest said the suspect will be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and possible recovery of the baby.
