Wike Explains Why He Didn’t Back Peter Obi in 2023 Election

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has revealed why he didn’t support Labour Party’s Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Wike said he didn’t consider Obi a serious contender, calling him a “social media candidate” with no real chance of winning.

“No, he has no chance to win election,” Wike stated. “I don’t do social media candidate.”

Wike, who is also a former governor of Rivers State, explained that his political choices are based on deep analysis of a candidate’s chances, not online popularity. He stressed that Nigerian elections involve many factors beyond qualifications or social media buzz.

“In politics, it’s not always about who is best,” he said. “So many factors come in.”

Reflecting on the challenges of the 2023 elections, Wike cited the naira redesign and fuel scarcity as major obstacles. He praised President Bola Tinubu for overcoming those hurdles, saying the period was extremely turbulent.
