Pressure Mounts on Contractors as Wike Enforces June Deadline in Abuja

Contractors handling major infrastructure projects in Abuja have been put on notice as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, insists that agreed timelines must be met without exception. He made it clear that projects scheduled for inauguration to mark the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration must be delivered as planned.

During an inspection tour across project sites on Wednesday, Wike voiced concern over delays observed in some areas, particularly a road construction project in Wuse. While he acknowledged that the overall quality of work has been satisfactory, he made it clear that timelines must be strictly adhered to.

According to him, agreements had already been made for completion between late May and June, and any deviation from that schedule would not be tolerated. He directed that the affected project must be completed and handed over by the second week of June.

Wike explained that the inspection visits are part of a broader effort to ensure accountability and maintain standards across all ongoing projects. He emphasized that the administration actively monitors progress on-site rather than relying solely on reports.

Despite his concerns about delays, the minister praised progress on other projects, including the N16 interchange, noting that the quality of work there has been impressive and remains on track for commissioning.

He also expressed satisfaction with the near-completion of a road and bridge project in Tunga Madaki, which connects Bill Clinton Drive along the Airport Road corridor to nearby communities. The project, he said, was initiated to improve access following the construction of a second runway by the aviation authorities.

Looking ahead, Wike revealed plans to extend the road network from that axis to Zuba. He noted that preliminary steps, such as procurement processes and compensation for affected residents, are already in progress. The expansion, he added, is part of efforts to ensure that development reaches satellite communities around the capital.

Beyond road construction, the minister highlighted ongoing investments in other sectors. He disclosed that satellite water projects in Bwari, Karu, and Orozo are set for commissioning, alongside upgrades in education and healthcare facilities, particularly in underserved areas.

Addressing recent water shortages in parts of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Wike attributed the issue to damage caused to a major pipeline by a private developer. He assured residents that repairs are underway and warned that appropriate action would be taken against those responsible, including the possibility of shutting down the offending project.

He urged residents to remain patient as efforts continue to restore normal water supply, reiterating the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and service delivery across both the city centre and surrounding districts under the government’s development agenda.
