Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum has extended financial support to the families of three senior military officers who lost their lives in the fight against insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.
In a move that underscores his administration’s continued backing for security personnel, Zulum approved a total of ₦150 million for the families of the late Lt. Col. Umar Farouq, Lt. Col. Salihu Iliyasu, and Lt. Col. Aliyu Saidu Paiko, all of whom were killed during counterinsurgency operations against Boko Haram.
The governor personally visited the bereaved families across different parts of the country to offer condolences and present the financial support. His first stop was in Abuja, where he met with the family of Lt. Col. Salihu Iliyasu. During the visit, he was received by the officer’s wives and expressed deep sympathy, describing the late soldier as a committed officer whose service to the nation would not be forgotten.
Zulum later travelled to Niger and Kano States, where he handed over ₦50 million each to the families of Lt. Col. Aliyu Saidu Paiko and Lt. Col. Umar Farouq. He praised the fallen officers for their bravery and dedication, noting that their sacrifices remain vital to Nigeria’s ongoing security efforts.
The visits form part of a broader initiative by the Borno State government to provide both financial and emotional support to families of military personnel affected by the conflict. Zulum also revealed plans to reach out to more families of officers who have been killed or remain missing in action.
Beyond the military, the governor has also been supporting local volunteer forces involved in the fight against insurgency. This includes scholarship programmes for children who have lost their parents in the line of duty, ensuring they have access to education despite their loss.
Zulum offered prayers for the deceased officers, asking for eternal rest for their souls and strength for their families as they cope with the loss.
Several top government officials accompanied the governor during the visits.
