Several construction workers are reportedly trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.
The multi-storey building, located at 20, Gerrard Road, collapsed on Monday.
“Even the owner of the house, Mr Gbadebo is there,” someone said in a video that has since gone viral. It was not immediately clear if the owner was trapped in the ruins.
The 25-storey building was under construction.
“I literally saw my life before me,” Muhammad Tukur, who claimed to have witnessed the collapse said in a tweet.
“I don’t think I’d be alive to tweet this if it were the one closer to our window. Our office was vibrating as the building was collapsing.”
Ibrahim Farinloye, the acting coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the development to GoldMyne TV. Mr Farinloye said emergency responders are heading to the scene.
The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, also said the agency has activated its emergency response plan.
The number of those trapped under the rubble and those who may have died was not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
“A 25-storey building collapsed by Musliu Junction, Ikoyi, Lagos. LASEMA is on top of the situation,” LASEMA spokesperson Nosa Okunbo said.
