Wale Edun Reflects on Tenure, Expresses Pride After Exit as Finance Minister

Wale Edun, has said he is fulfilled by his time in office, noting that he takes pride in the strides made in Nigeria’s economy during his tenure.

The Former Finance comments come shortly after President Bola Tinubu replaced him with Taiwo Oyedele as part of a cabinet reshuffle.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Edun expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in various capacities since May 2023, including as head of the Presidential Transition Committee, Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, and later as Minister of Finance.

He described his role as a privilege, adding that he was able to contribute to the administration’s economic reforms at a crucial time.

Reflecting on the situation he met on ground, Edun noted that the government inherited a struggling economy but said policies introduced under his watch helped to drive improvement. He highlighted an increase in economic growth from about 2 percent to above 4 percent, as well as a drop in inflation from roughly 35 percent to 15 percent.

He credited the progress to coordinated efforts aimed at stabilising the economy and rebuilding investor trust, stressing that the results were achieved through collaboration across different sectors.

Although he acknowledged that challenges still exist, Edun expressed confidence in the country’s economic outlook. He also wished his successor success in the role and affirmed his continued commitment to serving Nigeria.
