The United States Secret Service said it is collaborating with the Metropolitan Police Department to establish what led to the incident, which occurred near a security screening point.
The gunfire was reported close to the main magnetometer checkpoint where guests are cleared, prompting a swift response from security personnel and law enforcement officers at the scene.
Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the Secret Service, confirmed via X on Sunday that all protected individuals, including the president and first lady, were not harmed.
Authorities have taken one suspect into custody, while efforts continue to determine the condition of those affected and gather more details.
Guglielmi added that investigative teams remain on the ground assessing the situation, assuring that more updates will be shared as information becomes available.
