Prison pageants are common around the world.

Authorities usually organise them “to help prisoners with their self-esteem and promote integration,” The Guardian reported regarding a pageant held at the Talavera Bruce women’s prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2018.

“Hairdressers and makeup artists volunteer their time to prepare the contestants, who are judged on beauty, appeal and attitude,” the report said.

A convicted killer won the prize in 2019.

Back to Chidinma Ojukwu. She is being held in jail pending the conclusion of the case against her. Under Nigerian law, she remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
